Presenting...the Past of your Future

Oct 03, 2021

Oh boy, this is a fun concept that slips by most people as they oscillate between living in their past and projecting their future.

We’re becoming more conscious of our ineffective tendencies to view the future through the lens of the past. Ineffective because the past no longer applies in the future so there’s no inherent value in letting the concepts, thoughts, and feelings from the past be the shot callers of the future you. Although we must recognize the past has played a crucial role in bringing us to the present moment. The experiences and lessons learned in the past are all manifested in our current reality.

Who we are today is a reflection of our past. This often manifests in the form of battle wounds and scars that carry a perception of permanents. So letting go of the past seems difficult as it presents the idea of letting go of who you are. A culmination of the past.

Now, there’s a concept of living in the future that’s very attractive. Known as a habit of Transformational Leadership created by Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen, it offers the concept of looking at your desired future state and getting to know it so well that you can actually feel what it’s like to be in it. Then acting the part of your future self in the now.

This is powerful as it brings you back to dreaming and offers the idea of shedding your past and living and acting like your future self in the now. Thus manifesting it into reality. So this push-pull of shedding your past that no longer applies and bringing your future into reality by acting the part seems to be a proverbial tug of war in most lives.

So my hypothesis is that it’s all part of the experience and although we’re prompted to shed our no longer applicable past and lead from the future, without our past, we wouldn’t be who we are that’s looking to the future. It’s all good. However, the purpose of this post is to introduce that concept I mentioned in the beginning that we often overlook. Today will be tomorrow’s past. Our actions today, whether living in the past or the future are forging our reality tomorrow and that’s powerful to embrace.

Who we are today will be who we are tomorrow. Present time power is not to be overlooked as this day and your commitment to it are not only about winning but creating a new reality. Next week, you’ll recognize how this day played into that reality and then let it go.

Are you leading from the future and acting in the now? Or will you look back at this day being another reason why you’re not further ahead next week?
