The Gateless Gate

Dec 18, 2021

Do you need to get out of your own way? Is this all you need to do to succeed in life?

Consider the well-known Mahayana teaching: All beings are inherently enlightened, but because of their attachments and distorted views they can’t realize this fact.

We often struggle to move into the desired compelling future due to belief or concept in one's self or your circumstances. That belief in self or concept is not yours and was learned from the outside in. This in turn gives rise to another belief and concept that timing is needed to succeed. So when we experience inspiration and motivation that boosts our belief in self we feel excited and confident to make a run at something we desire thinking we have found the window of opportunity and it’s our time.

You say, "This time is gonna be different. It’s my time." Only to find hours later, the next day or a week or month later, that the belief in self, motivation, and confidence close up again like a gate and therefore justify once again that it’s not the right time. So you let yourself off the hook, EXCUSE YOURSELF and say things like, "Better luck next time," or "Hey, nobody's perfect. I'm only human. I tried my best." Isn’t it interesting to look at the word EXCUSE as used in EXCUSE YOURSELF and see that the act requires an excuse? 🙂

My First offering into the unknown today is to replace the exclamation points in your life !!!!! with question marks ????? Listen to what happens to your statements when asked as questions rather than statements of truth and fact.

Now's not a good time!
I can’t afford it!
No, these are not my thing!
That program didn’t work for me!

By stating things as facts, you create an invisible gate that closes you in and prohibits any further progress. It’s invisible because the statements aren’t factual. They’re actually fictional. Try it. Change "Now's not a good time!" to "Now's not a good time?" That question mark strikes curiosity and a sequence of fact-checking that will uncover the excuse and Gateless Gate. Furthermore, there are other great words we can replace that prohibit us from labeling and affirming ourselves as losers as self-talk is more powerful than we know.

See, I refer to things like motivation, belief, timing, and how they appear to be both necessary and in control of our future reality. Keyword APPEAR! Or adding the three powerful open-ended and full of possibility words AT THIS TIME. Rather than saying "I can’t do something," add on "AT THIS TIME" and leave the Gateless Gate open for another time.

See, I feel we control this reality because we control how we look at things. I believe it’s all a fantasy and we are the author, director, and leading character once we stop closing the Gateless Gate on ourselves. So there’s that conscious statement we often use that unveils our ability to see the unseeable Gateless Gate. We say « I just need to get out of my own way » This means we see it and know it’s not actually there.

What’s the solution then? How do we execute something that isn’t really factual? Are you actually in your own way or is that the Gateless Gate and just a metaphor we use to acknowledge it?

See, I contend that you don’t need to get out of your own way. Rather, I think you need to only realize that nothing is in your way. Including you. You simply must release from the programmed concepts of what holds you back and focus on what you want and why. Refocusing on your goal and why takes your gaze off the gate and back on track. You are forgiven as you knew not what you were doing until today.
